The spread of Corona continues in correctional facilities, with 39 additional confirmed cases at the Seoul Eastern Detention Center and Incheon Detention Center, where the cluster infection of COVID-19 occurred. The Ministry of Justice announced on the 5th that as a result of conducting a COVID-19 fishar (PCR) test on inmates at these detention centers, 37 inmates at the Eastern Detention Center and 2 inmates at the Incheon Detention Center were additionally confirmed. As of this day, the cumulative number of confirmed cases is 288, including 218 inmates and 4 staff at the Dongbu Detention Center, and 64 inmates and 2 staff at the Incheon Detention Center. In both cases, the number of confirmed cases has continued after new inmates were confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 at the end of last month. The Ministry of Justice took the same group (cohort) quarantine measures in the detention centers where the confirmed cases occurred, and the unconfirmed prisoners were dispersed and transferred to other correctional facilities. Most of the confirmed cases in these detention centers are said to be asymptomatic or show mild cold symptoms. Deputy Justice Minister Kang Seong-guk visited the Dongbu Detention Center on the same day and urged correctional facilities officials to “quickly classify and manage close contacts, and thoroughly check their movement to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.” On the other hand, as of the 6th, there were 38,691 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, accounting for 30,000 for two days in a row.
