Today (24th), a week after the strengthened ‘social distancing’ measures were implemented, the number of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Korea was in the low 6,000 range.

The number of new confirmed cases has fallen below 7,000 since the previous day, but the number of patients with severe cases is recording the highest every day.

The Central Defense Response Headquarters announced that as of 00:00 on the same day, there were 6,233 new confirmed cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 596,209.

The number of new confirmed cases decreased by 685 from the previous day (6,918), recording the 6,000 level for two days in a row, and 1,201 fewer than the 7,434 on the 17th a week ago.

The quarantine authorities diagnosed that the increase in the size of the epidemic is slowing due to the effect of social distancing measures that have been implemented since the beginning of this month.

On the 6th, the government limited the number of private gatherings to 6 people in the metropolitan area and 8 people in the non-metropolitan area and expanded the facilities applying the quarantine pass. It was shortened to 9 o’clock.

However, the decrease in the number of new cases did not lead to a decrease in the number of patients with severe cases.

On this day, the number of patients with severe serious illness was 1,84, an increase of one from the previous day (1,83), the highest number for every day.

From the 21st (1,22 people) to the 4th day, the number of patients with severe cases was around 1,000.

As there is a time lag of 4-5 days for the increase or decrease in the number of confirmed cases to be reflected in the number of patients with severe cases, quarantine authorities expect the number of patients with severe cases to decrease next week.

56 people died the day before, bringing the total number of deaths to 5,71.

The average fatality rate is 0.85%.

The number of infected with Omicron mutation also increased by 16, bringing the total to 262.

Excluding cases imported from abroad, the number of confirmed cases in Korea is an average of 6,319 per day.

A total of 4,404 (71.5%) were found in the metropolitan area, including 2,324 in Seoul, 1,647 in Gyeonggi, and 433 in Incheon.

For non-metropolitan areas, Busan 419, Gyeongnam 228, Chungnam 176, Daegu 150, Gyeongbuk 144, Gangwon 129, Jeonbuk 117, Chungbuk 90, Daejeon 81, Jeonnam 68, Gwangju 54, Ulsan 43 , a total of 1,759 people (28.5%), including 36 in Sejong and 24 in Jeju.

Combining local outbreaks and overseas inflows (excluding quarantine), the total is 4,452 in the metropolitan area alone, including 2,346 in Seoul, 1,668 in Gyeonggi, and 438 in Incheon.

Meanwhile, the completion rate of domestic COVID-19 vaccination is 82.3% (cumulative 42,259,139 people) as of 00:00 on the day, and 27.9% (14,304,492) of the total population have completed the additional vaccination.
