When independent lawmaker Park Deok-heum served as a member of the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, his family company won an order worth hundreds of billions of won ReportThese companies filed a defamation lawsuit against the reporter, but lost in the second trial following the first trial. On the 17th, the 13th Civil Division of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judge Kang Min-koo) filed a claim for damages of 250 million won against reporters from five construction companies, including Wonha Construction, Wonhwa Corporation, Lee Jun Construction, Power Development, and Hyeyeong Construction, which are members of the Park’s family. In the appeals court, the plaintiff’s appeal was dismissed, saying, “The plaintiff’s appeal is dismissed.” The court stated the reason for rejecting the dismissal, saying, “Even if the evidence adopted and investigated by this court is added to the evidence legally adopted and investigated by the first instance, the fact and judgment of the first instance are justified.” Previously, in September of last year, it was reported exclusively that during the five years that Rep. Park served as a member of the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, his family companies earned 100 billion won in construction costs and technology usage fees from audited organizations such as the National Railroad Corporation. Controversy over conflicts of interest has arisen because these companies were established by Rep. Park as the largest shareholder, or their son and older brother were the representatives. As a result, Assemblyman Park resigned from the power of the people. Park’s family company filed a lawsuit in November last year, saying, “The fact that the companies won the construction orders and the fact that Rep. Park is a member of the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee were reported to make it look like they were driving an unfair job, but it is clearly false.” In June, the court of first instance ruled against the plaintiff, saying, ‘There is a possibility that the social evaluation of the plaintiff may be lowered due to the overall impression of the article, but the public interest of the report is recognized and the article was written based on objective facts’.
