State-run IRIB broadcasters reported that the first case of infection with Omicron, a new mutant of COVID-19, was confirmed in Iran.

Iran’s Ministry of Health said it had confirmed that a man who had traveled to a neighboring country was infected with Omicron, and said it was investigating two suspected cases.

In the Middle East, cases of Omicron mutation infection were reported in Saudi Arabia at the beginning of this month, then the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar.

There are also concerns that Omicron may have already spread widely in Iran, where there are no strict restrictions on overseas travel.
