From luxury to tragedy, from exclusivity to public derision, this is how the history of Gucci has passed, an Italian fashion house that, since its founding in the hands of Guccio Gucci, in Florence in 1921, has not only been linked to global success by its empire in luxury products, but scandals, personal and economic betrayals and death have brought this dynasty into the public eye with the courts always involved.

Today November 25 hits theaters “House of Gucci (The Gucci House), a film directed by Ridley Scott, starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver; In this film the myths that have haunted the family reappear and he will seek to clarify what really happened in this dynasty: why was one of the greatest heirs of fashion, Maurizio Gucci, assassinated outside his company ?

Although the official conclusions have pointed to Patrizia Reggiani (played by Lady Gaga), who was a partner of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), as the intellectual author of the murder, the origins of the family lawsuits lie in the decisions that the founder Guccio Gucci made by defining your heritage and determining which of your children should rule your emporium.

“House of Gucci”, also co-starred by Al Pacino, Jared Leto, Salma Hayek and Jeremy Irons, part of the book “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamor, and Greed”, by Sara Gay Forden, who covered this fashion house for more than 15 years.

The origin

To understand how it is that Patrizia Reggiani, foreign in its beginning to the dynasty Gucci, ended the life of the greatest heir of the family Gucci, it is important to go back to the origins of Guccio, who prior to becoming one of the designers who enshrined the prestigious legend “Made in Italy”, worked as a bellboy and assistant at the Savoy Hotel, in London, a job in which he would find a market niche not fully explored Seeing how luggage at that time was taken as a sign of social status, he decided to give a cosmopolitan vision to briefcases and travel bags based on the artisan work of leather.

Back in Florence in 1921, Guccio officially founded Gucci, a company that diversified its items and added to the coveted suitcases: scarves, gloves, belts and shoes, which were identifiable with the double “GG”.

Rodolfo and Aldo Gucci, Guccio’s sons, were appointed by their father to take the management of the company to international levels with New York as an anchor city to increase the furor for the brand in Hollywood.

Although the disputes over the distribution of the brand were constant between the brothers, when Rodolfo died in 1983, his son Maurizio would take control of the family emporium, without imagining that his complicated marriage with Patrizia Reggiani would be one of the most violent movements for stability. from Gucci.

It is known about Patrizia that her childhood was full of precariousness in her native Milan as she did not have a father and coped with the day to day with the salary that her mother had as a waitress; But her destiny changed when her mother married Ferdinando Reggiani, a businessman in the field of transport, who decided to give her his last name, Patrizia, then 12 years old, making her one of the wealthiest young women in Italy in the blink of an eye.

The rise to madness

Being one of the most active women in the outstanding social events of Milan, Patrizia met Maurizio Gucci in 1970, with whom two years later she decided to marry and start a new family with the birth of her two daughters: Alessandra (in 1977) and Allegra (in 1981).

Patrizia, who was known to be passionate about luxury, assured after her arrest and subsequent imprisonment for 18 years, that her marriage to Maurizio was not free of intrigue and betrayal, in addition to never obtaining the approval of Rodolfo Gucci, who always He opposed his son Maurizio being related to who was considered a “gold digger”.

In her book Sara Gay Forden, she notes that while Maurizio made the decisions about Gucci’s journey, Patrizia pressed for the firm to take other directions through plans with little projection that meant large economic losses.

Between 1985 and 1991, Maurizio and Patrizia divorced after years of separation and allegations that her then husband had relationships with other women and unacknowledged children, this being one of the main research hypotheses to affirm that jealousy and fear that his daughters not receiving inheritance would be the main motives for orchestrating the murder.

Although Maurizio kept his word by providing Patrizia with monthly payments of up to $ 100,000 for the well-being of her daughters, Patrizia continued to demand more resources from her ex-husband when she was “deprived” of her ostentatious life.

Gucci’s darkest day

On March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci, 46 years old, was assassinated in one of the most luxurious neighborhoods of Milan, at the hands of a hitman, related to the Italian mafia, who in four shots ended the life of one of the most powerful moguls in European fashion.

Although the first investigations focused on possible settlements of accounts with the mafia, in 1997 the police arrested Patrizia, who had taken power in Maurizio’s properties; the woman was accused of being the mastermind of the murder of her former partner.

The arrest of Patrizia caused one of the most media coverage in the 90s, giving birth to the “black widow of fashion”, who after contradictory statements, finally accepted his trial for the murder of Maurizio, initially receiving a 29-year sentence imprisonment, which was later shortened to 26 years, although it ended at 18 due to his good behavior.

Away from public life, Patrizia has been captured on several occasions in Milan, and upon learning that the actress and singer Lady Gaga would be in charge of interpreting her, the so-called “black widow of fashion” expressed to local media not agreeing with that was not taken into account for the version that will be displayed on the screen.
