[Pick] Nobel Peace Prize Ethiopian Prime Minister: ‘Let’s meet on the battlefield’

“Now is the time for a martyr spirit for our country.”

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abi Ahmerd, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has announced that he will personally lead the government’s army and take part in the war against Tigrai.

In a statement posted on Twitter on the night of the 22nd local time, Prime Minister Ahmed said, “From tomorrow, I will lead the army forward.” He then said to the Ethiopian people, “Let’s meet on the battlefield.”

Prime Minister Ahmed was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for major political reforms and for ending the long-standing conflict with Eritrea, which borders Ethiopia. The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize has become a hot topic as it is the 100th award.

Prime Minister Ahmed’s declaration of participation in the war, which he expressed at the time as ‘war is hell’, clearly shows Ethiopia’s current situation.

The civil war in Ethiopia, which began in November 2020, is reported to have begun this month, as Prime Minister Ahmed’s government forces have been on the defensive, and the rebel Tigrai People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is attempting to enter the capital Addis Ababa. The northern TPLF is said to have advanced to Shewa Lobit Town, 220 km northeast of the capital.

The TPLF is Ethiopia’s former ruling party, which began to fight back after losing power to the current government in 2018.

The Associated Press reported, citing experts, that “the situation is extremely dangerous” and that “if[the prime minister]gets hurt or dies, not only the federal government will fall, but the military as well.”

It is known that thousands of people have been killed and more than 2.5 million displaced in the civil war that has lasted for about a year.

The international community is concerned that a civil war in Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous country, could split the entire ‘Horn of Africa’ region.

Meanwhile, the US State Department issued a statement calling for a peaceful resolution to the Ethiopian civil war, saying, “There is no military solution to the civil war in Ethiopia. Only diplomacy should be the first, last, and only option.” Countries such as France, Germany and Turkey, including the United States, have ordered their citizens to ‘leave immediately’.

This is a ‘news pick’.
