For many people, early morning coffee is part of their daily routine – but it is not a good idea. For those of us who don’t feel viable without our first coffee, there is one thing we need to be aware of.

All coffee lovers have to be very strong now, because: If you take a sip of the popular hot drink immediately after getting up, you are unfortunately doing everything wrong.

No coffee after getting up – thanks to cortisol

British surgeon and mega TikTok star Dr. Karan Raj explained on the program “BBC Morning Live” why we should all stop drinking hot coffee as soon as we get up: Coffee provides a boost of energy, which our body does, however, in the form of cortisol (also known as hydrocortisone) forms even after waking up. Between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., the level of cortisol in the body is particularly high. Cortisol is a stress hormone. It activates the metabolism and makes us feel awake. If we have a coffee right after getting up, it tastes good, but does not make any additional contribution to waking up. Some experts believe that the effects of caffeine would even diminish if we drink coffee regularly at this time of day.

The best time to have a morning coffee

With the hot coffee right after getting up, we only confuse our body and intervene in the natural wake-up process. We should only get the caffeine boost when our cortisol level drops and our energy levels drop. Experts advise earliest one hour after waking up to go into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee. Then the level of cortisol in the body drops and the caffeine starts to work.
