He lost his parliamentary seat 40 days after it became known that his son had received 5 billion won from Hwacheon Daeyu and announced his intention to resign.
With Kwak’s resignation as a member of the National Assembly, the prosecution’s investigation is also expected to gain momentum.
Rep. Kwak is suspected of exerting influence on Hana Bank when the consortium of Hwacheon Daeyu, which was formed with Hana Bank in the early days of the Daejang-dong development project, was on the verge of collapse.
It is believed that Rep. Kwak, who was the chief of civil affairs at the time, exerted influence to favor Hwacheon Daeyu, and in return received a large sum of money in the form of severance pay through his son.
It is also known that the prosecution made these allegations when they requested the first arrest warrant for Kim Man-bae, the owner of Hwacheon Daewoo.
Rep. Kwak is also suspected of exerting influence in reducing the area of cultural heritage excavation, which can become an obstacle to the development of Daejang-dong.
The investigation team of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, which is investigating these allegations, is considering a plan to apply the charge of mediation to Kwak and summon him soon.
Immediately after the resignation bill was passed, Rep. Kwak posted on his social media account, saying he was sorry for the performance pay his son received, but he would definitely prove that he was not involved in anything related to the Daejang-dong development project and Hwacheon Daeyu.
